Course details
Specialty coffee isn’t your average cup of joe. It’s a journey—from the plantation to the espresso machine. It all starts with carefully cultivated beans, harvested with precision, and ends in a perfectly brewed espresso or filter coffee. It’s not about mass production; it’s about quality. Every detail matters: grind size, water temperature, extraction time—each variable influences the final taste. The better you understand these factors, the more flavor and enjoyment you get from your coffee.
And then, there’s the community. Specialty coffee is a movement, a network of people just as passionate about coffee as you are. Baristas, roasters, and coffee lovers constantly share knowledge, test new brewing methods, and experiment with roast profiles to bring out that one perfect flavor note. It’s about transparency, sustainability, and, most importantly, the joy of discovering what coffee can truly be.
Want to dive deeper into specialty coffee? In our barista workshops and coffee courses, you’ll learn not just how to make a great coffee but also how to recognize and refine flavors. Because coffee is more than just a morning ritual—it’s a craft, an art, and most of all, something to enjoy together.
Cupping is a standardized method within the specialty coffee industry used to evaluate the flavors and aromas of different coffees. Think of it as a wine tasting—but for coffee. This technique is essential for coffee roasters, buyers, and baristas to assess the quality of coffee beans and identify specific flavor profiles.
The goal of cupping is to highlight the unique characteristics of a coffee, such as sweetness, acidity, body, and aftertaste. By tasting different coffees side by side, subtle differences become more noticeable—flavors that might otherwise go undetected. This process is a crucial part of quality control and helps in selecting the best coffee beans.
At the moment, we do not offer cupping courses or workshops. However, Coffee Habits in Haarlem regularly hosts cupping sessions. If you're interested, we recommend keeping an eye on our Instagram account for upcoming events and updates.
Unfortunately, we provide workshops to introduce people to the world of specialty coffee. Certificates from the Specialty Coffee Association are obtained through intensive courses of about 12 hours per topic. These courses are more focused on experienced baristas.
The maximum group size is six. This ensures that the workshop is always tailored to the interests and experience of the participants and that everyone receives enough attention and time. Private lessons are certainly possible and are listed here.
During the workshop, we can practice with cow's milk, ROA oat milk or Alpro coconut milk.
Currently, we use coffee from Manhattan Coffee Roasters in Rotterdam. If you want to buy this coffee, you can do so after the workshop or on the website of Manhattan.
Unfortunately, we do not offer this service at the moment. However, almost all the theory you learn in our workshop is applicable to your own machine. We can also provide specific tips and advice for your setup.
